Many people confuse the athlete’s foot with ring worms. But athlete’s foot is actually a fungal infection that is quite different from ring worms. This infection starts in between the toes. A number of fungi cause this infection. These are the same fungi that cause ringworm and jock itch as well. These fungi belong to the group dermatophytes. They feed on a protein called keratin that is found in skin, hair, and nails. There are many types of athlete’s foot. In one type you will see blisters forming on your feet. Another type of athlete’s foot causes dryness of the foot and you will see scaling that will move up from the soles. If you scratch it with your hand then the infection might spread in your hands too.

Due to confinement
If you wear tight shoes all the time your feet are likely to become sweaty. This causes athlete’s foot. That’s why athlete’s foot in the military is very common.The fungi that cause this infection grows in warm, damp and dark conditions. So, when you wear tight shoes, the fungi get the perfect environment to grow causing athlete’s food.
Public places that are usually damp
Public places such as shower areas or the place surrounding swimming pools are perfect for the athlete’s foot causing fungi to grow. If you visit these places barefoot, then there is high chance that you will have this infection on your foot.
Sharing things about an infected person
If you share socks, shoes or towels with a person who is infected with athlete’s foot then you will have this disease. Usually, when you have athlete’s foot, a scaly rash appears on the foot. But sometimes you won’t be able to tell whether a person infected with athlete’s foot or not. They won’t show any signs of infection, whereas they are carrying the infection. So, it is better to avoid sharing shoes, towels or socks with anyone to reduce the risk of having athlete’s foot.
Some people are highly resistant to this infection; whereas, others can get infected very easily. People who have diabetes or an impaired immune system have more risk of having athlete’s foot. When you have this infection, you will get a burning and stinging feeling. Itching will also make you very uncomfortable. If you see that your condition is getting worse then you should either get over-the-counter medicine or consult a doctor.
